Simple But NOT EASY Weight Loss

Many of us want to reveal our "hidden six pack" before the summer season and I have the simple formula to achieve just that.

It is a simple two part process:

1) cut back your caloric intake by 500 calories a day. This is a minuscule amount of calories that adds up to a pound a week. This means portion control and avoiding a heaping dessert. You can still eat sweets etc. but just don't over eat. Eating at a slower pace is one simple trick to allow your brain to catch up to your stomach, letting you know that you are full.

2) This second step is crucial to losing the unwanted pounds. It involves the dreaded EXERCISE. Do not dismay. The exercise involved is minimal but has phenomenal results! The program involves a treadmill and a stopwatch. Most treadmills have timers attached to them so that makes it easy to track our progress. Depending on your current health status, start out by setting the treadmill at an incline of 8 and a speed of 4. Keep your hands on the rails for one minute then remove your hands for one minute. Do this for a total of ten minutes then raise the incline to 10 and lower the speed to 3. Repeat the one minute on and one minute off routine for another ten minutes then drop the incline down to 4 and the speed to 2. Finish the last ten minutes with the same one minute on one minute off program until you reach a total of 30 minutes. Congratulations! You have just spent 30 minutes on the treadmill and burned a good amount of calories. Once this becomes too easy for you, move on to the next, more advanced program.

The more advanced program involves setting the incline at 6 and the speed at 6. The trick here is that you let the treadmill run for 30 seconds with your feet on either side of the track. Then, you jump onto the track and run for 30 seconds then jump off for 30seconds. Repeat this process for ten minutes then bump up the incline to 10 and the speed down to 3 for another series of 30 seconds on and off for the next ten minutes. You will feel like stopping at about 15 minutes BUT DON'T DO IT! The final ten minutes involves dropping the incline down to zero and increasing the speed to as high as it will allow without stopping. This is about 9 for me because of my 250lbs but it may be 10 or more for you.

I have used the above technique, alternating the first and second versions every other day, to lose 10 pounds in a single week! There is a HUGE CAVEAT however! Burning all of these calories WILL MAKE YOU HUNGRY! Do Not give in to this hunger or you will undo all the progress you are making. Find a good green drink to curb your hunger and enable your body to adjust to the new level of health that you have created.

Weight Loss Secrets: Counting Calories

The calorie originated in the 19th century as a measurement of heat, and today is mostly used to track the energy potential of the foods we eat.

The best thing about calories is that they seem to be everywhere. They are measurable, quantifiable, and the data on them is readily available. Almost every food product sold in the supermarket contains nutritional information, which specifies the number of calories per serving of that particular food (some foods don't, of course, and the issue of stealth calories will be dealt with in a later article). Thus, they're a perfect vehicle for monitoring whether or not we're eating too much. Some experts criticize the exaggerated focus on calorie counting in many diets, but at the end of the day they make it easy to figure out whether we're on the correct path to weight loss.

If you surf the web and fill out different calorie counters, you'll get a range of estimates on what your daily intake should be. The variance is usually around 10%. To simplify our discussion, we're going to assume that the daily calorie consumption for men should be in the range of roughly 2500, and about 2000 for women. This assumes an age of around 40, average build, and moderate level of exercise. Depending on the variables, your recommended daily intake could be as low as 2100 (men) and 1600 (women).

DOING THE CALORIE MATH

Let's assume you should be consuming 2500 calories per day to maintain your current weight. What to you need to do to start trimming down? Most experts will tell you that if you eliminate 500 calories per day from your diet, you'll lose one pound each week; it's as simple as that. Thus, it becomes easy to keep tabs on those 500 calories if you're taking note of exactly what you're consuming (more on this in the next post, Keeping A Journal).

Of course, if your recommended level is 2500 calories per day, 500 represents 20% of your total intake, which is no small sacrifice. If your ideal level is 2100, the percentage jumps to nearly 24%. This seems like tough sledding, until you recognize your hidden factor for success:

EXERCISE!

Let's assume you get in the habit of going out for a walk every evening, or whenever it's convenient. If you walk for 30 minutes at a reasonably brisk pace (a 15 or 16-minute mile), you'll burn at least 200 calories. If you want to be more precise, get on a state-of-the-art treadmill and measure how many calories you burn at different speeds and levels of incline. It doesn't matter when you walk, but it's best to schedule it at the same time each day. Personally, I like to walk in the morning. If I burn 200 calories at the start of the day and have my normal breakfast of a protein bar, I'm basically even. I won't have to start counting calories until lunchtime.

If you burn 200 calories exercising each day, the goal of 500 seems much closer, and your level of sacrifice is obviously lower. On top of that, consider all the other benefits of exercise: you'll feel better, you'll be healthier, you'll live longer, and you'll have less desire to consume food. This last point is crucial. The dynamics of weight loss can be compared to a progressive jackpot as a casino. If you play only one machine, your potential payout is limited. Switch to a bank of machines, and the size of your possible jackpot grows exponentially. Exercise will not only facilitate weight loss, but also stimulate your desire to do more and go further.

A WORD OF CAUTION

Before we leave the subject of calorie counting, you need to be aware of The Portion Trap.

While most foods sold in the supermarket are labeled with nutritional information, many have that information broken down by portion. It's crucial that you look at the number of portions contained in each package, since it's usually more than one. That package of frozen macaroni and cheese may look awfully tempting, and if you take a quick glance at the numbers, it might appear to have only 250 calories. Not bad, you think, and perfectly acceptable as an indulgence that fits into your diet regimen. If you look closely at the package, however, you'll probably see that it contains 3.5 portions, or nearly 900 calories, roughly 36% of your recommended daily intake.

Take the time to read the information on each item you buy. It may seem time-consuming, but it's part of the process of being more careful about what you put into your body.

Weight Loss and the Real World

What happens when a new weight loss study is announced is that the media jump on it and you get headlines like:

Artificial sweeteners no silver bullet for losing weight

And the whole thing, whether or not it's valuable information, is hyped up and made into something much more than it really is. I've also noticed that much of the research merely provides evidence for what I've known and been teaching for many years now, so I'm not often surprised by the findings.

But let me tell you why this study information sometimes needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

There are four main areas that we need to be concerned with for weight loss:

Non-pharmaceutical weight loss productsPharmaceutical weight loss productsBehaviour i.e. eating patterns & activityFat clubs e.g. Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig...

Non-pharmaceutical Weight loss products

This is the likes of Acai, Hoodia, teas, slimming drinks, patches, and all of the incredibly expensive products provided for people who think the solution to eating too much and not exercising enough is a tablet or a magic drink. This is the territory of the Health-Food shop/web site. Now I have to say I have absolutely no experience with any of these products, so if you've had good results using them, and you've kept the weight off, then let me know below. My gut feeling is that they are a waste of money and sales owe more to the skill of the advertisers than to any efficacy they possess.

Pharmaceutical weight loss products

There are not a lot of pharmaceutical weight loss products around but two are about to receive FDA approval: Belviq and Qnexa. They are both, in my opinion, attempts by the manufacturers to make $ billions rather than any serious attempt at providing a safe weight loss product. The stock of both the manufacturing companies went up through the roof as soon as they passed the first stage of FDA approval. Qnexa was originally rejected by the FDA two years ago, but I understand that the manufacturer spent a lot of money to convince the FDA panel that they should reconsider.

Both drugs contain components from an earlier weight loss drug that was withdrawn for safety reasons, and so they should be causing serious concern about the side-effects. But it seems the FDA is happy for the long-term safety trials to take place after approval. The benefit of using the drugs (in terms of weight lost) is so small when compared with known safe methods that they are just not worth the risk. Nevertheless as soon as they pass the final FDA hurdle (which they undoubtedly will) they will be prescribed in their billions by overworked doctors who will be grateful that they can spend two minutes printing a prescription, rather than providing counselling, education, and advice; alongside real help, support and encouragement.

Behaviour

Behaviour is the area of interest of most of the studies. Psychological studies (and that's what they are) require volunteers. Volunteers need to be informed about the subject area of the study. So you know you are signing up for a weight loss study. In order to do that you have probably given up trying to lose weight without help, and you are probably quite motivated because they are going to ask you to do stuff and you are going to have to comply - because that's what you agree with when you sign up. You are also in it with quite a few other people. You get the attention of the researchers. You get to feel that you are doing something worthwhile and helping others.

All of these things are motivational.

They are also not normal and not found in the real world of people struggling desperately to lose weight.

So, in part, studies are always studying themselves.

They create some circumstances and then test them out.

When you are given a diet plan and told to stick to it for 16 weeks as part of a study - most people will succeed. But give 100 people that same diet plan and never plan to contact them again and you'll find almost no one stuck to the diet for the full 16 weeks, because that's human nature. We behave differently when we know no one is watching and no one is checking up on us.

It doesn't matter what is being studied, we behave differently when we know we are being watched. The most interesting studies are when the participants are lied to. For instance one study pretended to be about testing the flavour of different cookies and that's what the participants thought they were doing, but they were actually being tested on how much they ate based on a drink they'd been given earlier to fill them up. Participants on a diet ate more cookies than those who were eating normally.

The real question that needs to be asked is 'does this work in the real world'.

What seems to work in the real world is eating a little less, exercising a little more, and re-learning to listen to your body.

Fat Clubs

Fat clubs are the socially acceptable places where you go when you want company in your attempts to lose weight. They provide a social environment. Everyone has the same problem. They give you solutions. If you follow their guidelines you lose weight. But I get a lot of clients who've tried these places and they still come to me for help. Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Slimming World and the like do help you lose weight, but they use a dieting model, and dieting just doesn't work long-term. You don't sign up to these places for life. You sign up and stay until you either get fed-up with the classes, or reach your goal weight. Then you revert to your old-style eating patterns and before very long you are overweight again - only this time it's much harder to shift the weight.

Weight Loss Through The Power Of Positive Thinking

Many people want to lose weight and continually try with results that leave them feeling like they are on a roller-coaster. It seems despite the myriad diets tried in trying to drop the weight; the weight is either gained back or the results are disappointing.

One of the main reasons this happens to so many people trying to lose weight is due to their beginning the process with a mindset of failure instead of success. Even if the mindset is not necessarily negative there is still a lack of confidence as well as that of planning and goal setting, critical in achieving any milestone in life.

I once heard a gentleman that I know say something very profound. Not quoting him, basically he said that anyone can do anything as long as they are willing to step a little outside of their comfort zone. For example, most people can learn to play guitar, but many don't because they will not venture beyond the comfort zone. Stepping beyond the comfort zone in this scenario is actually taking the time, one hour or even half an hour daily to physically do something, in this case practice. It requires effort. Not a lot, just consistent.

Just like learning a new instrument or skill, losing weight is going to require some effort, a stepping outside the comfort zone. Unfortunately, the battle is lost before it begins, because it was lost in the mind with negativity. A thought creeps in like "I've tried so many diets and nothing works for me," thus ringing the death knell of the diet. The mind is a very powerful tool which can work for us or against us. Have you ever known someone who, when cold and flu season arrive, confidently informs everyone they are quite certain they are going to become sick; and in short order they in fact actually become ill with a cold or flu?

Thinking this way is not only counterproductive to moving forward in any endeavor, it is dangerous in the implications it can have upon interpersonal relationships, ability to cope with stress, and self-image. For the person who is trying to lose weight, these types of thought processes are diet killers and weight gain fillers.

How then shall we think? This is by far the greatest challenge and yet the most powerful tool in the battle of the bulge that so many desperately want to win. Change your thinking. This will take focused and concentrated effort. It requires practice just like learning guitar or how to become a skilled craftsman.

When the negative thoughts enter your mind, immediately replace them with positive thoughts that support and encourage. Think not of the number of diets tried and failed but rather of the success you are going to have. Engage in positive self-talk combined with audibly spoken positive affirmations. In other words, talk to yourself in a positive manner, and speak out loud to yourself statements that enforce what you are trying to achieve and are encouragements to yourself. These must be unique to you and your situation of which only you can know. To provide an idea however, something like, "I am excited that I am going to lose this weight", or "I am strong and confident and will achieve my goal." These are general but they provide the type of thinking to enforce.

There will be mental effort, physical effort, and emotional battles all well within your ability to overcome and rise above; especially if you repeat this to yourself every day, out loud for several minutes while engaged in daily tasks. When a person repeats an activity every day for thirty days, they will have achieved a habit. If you continue your audible affirmations for ninety days, you will have changed your thinking.

Keep in mind that this positive change in thinking, as healthy and uplifting as it is, will not shed the weight if there is no change in sedentary habits and diet. It is obviously important to get up and move which includes anything from taking a walk to a rigorous physical exercise program. The important point here is to prepare the mind to control the body. Bring the flesh into submission.

When considering your diet, instead of focusing on food you should avoid, which is promoting negativity, think instead of the exciting changes in what, when, and the way you eat. This promotes a more positive thinking process. Embracing the challenge of weight loss and adopting a new lifestyle of diet and exercise is exciting and positive. It is filled with discovery of different dishes and cooking styles, including new things and even tastes.

The most rewarding part of this whole process is that you will become more confident and self-assured. Why? Because you're changing the way you think and building upon those positive attributes. Additionally, by changing your diet to that of healthy foods filled with nutrients and vitamins, such as fresh fruits and raw and slightly steamed vegetables, overall health and wellness is going to get better and better, and that feels great!

Of course when entering into any type of exercise and diet program, there are many other factors that must also be considered. Every individual is different and has various circumstances that are unique to them. So take on the positive challenge, but do so with good research and preparations, asking questions of your doctor or nutritionist to ensure you are doing what is personally best for you. Just keep in mind something very important about other people; with everything in life you undertake that is positive, somewhere out there is what my beloved sister used to refer to as "energy vampires". I have always called them "negative nillies". Remember not to allow them to steal your thunder; stay the course, stay positive, and stay outside that comfort zone and you will succeed, and that is the whole point of all of this.
